Synopsis[]

A creature sighting causes the team to discover that a man had kidnapped and abused a pterosaur, and will stop at nothing to silence anyone who gets in his way. Meanwhile, two mysterious people appear, making Matt wonder if they are who the second Matt was referring to. Have the A.R.C team met their match, and who are these two mysterious individuals?

Plot[]

The episode begins with a man in a shed abusing several rare and exotic birds enclosed in small cages, though one of them is obviously not a bird, but a Tapejara. As he tries to decide which of his birds in his inventory shall be sold on the black market, his teenage son, Darren, knocks on the shed door and meekly informs him that dinner is ready. The man, irked that he was interrupted, lashes out at his son, insulting him with several slurs before sending him back inside. Once Darren leaves, the man hits the Tapejara to make it quiet, as it reacted angrily at the man's treatment toward his son, before exiting the shed and locking it.

Later, during dinner, the man, whose name is revealed to be Roger, angrily berates his wife, Eve, for screwing up the food and verbally abuses her. Eve apologizes, but Roger continues his verbal assault. Darren tries to defend his mother, but Roger tells him to shut up, and throws several insults at him. Darren is visibly hurt by Roger's verbal assault but says nothing as Eve and Roger get into another verbal altercation that results in Roger slapping Eve.

Later that evening, when his parents are asleep, Darren breaks into his father's shed and makes his way to the Tapejara, where it is revealed that he had formed a bond with it. He greets the pterosaur before venting his feelings and frustrations of his home life to the pterosaur, stating his intention of running away from home once he turns eighteen in a couple of days. The Tapejara comforts him and Darren promises that he'll get take the pterosaur with him once he sets his plans in motion before they are interrupted by the arrival of Roger, who had woken up to pack some of his birds up for another deal.

Angered that Darren had broken into his shed, Roger attacks him, punching him in the face and pinning him to the ground. As Roger strangles Darren, the Tapejara pecks Roger in the arm, causing him to loosen his hold over Darren's neck and to tend to his wound. Darren, knowing that both he and the Tapejara will be dead if he doesn't do something, seizes the opportunity to open the pterosaur's cage and set it free. As the Tapejara flees into the night, Roger, realizing what had happened, berates Darren for his actions before grabbing a net, tire iron, and a cage before ordering Darren and Eve, who had gotten up to see what the commotion was, to help him track and recapture the Tapejara.

Meanwhile, at the A.R.C, Matt is busy going through the ARC database for anything about the Home Office before Emily arrives at his office. She tells him that it's getting late and that they should get going. Matt, however, tells her that he must get his answers. Emily tries to reason with him, but before she can finish, Matt finds what he is looking for and they both read the database entry on the Home Office. However, it doesn't provide the answers he was looking for, much to his frustration. Emily asks what his next course of action will be, to which he tells her that he'll try to press the second Matt for more information the next time he encounters him.

Meanwhile, the Lakes have tracked the Tapejara to a car park, but despite Eve's pleas for Roger to stop, he snaps at her and tells her to shut up before trying to capture the pterosaur. However, despite the moonless night, the Tapejara is able to detect Roger sneaking up on it by sniffing the air and takes off. However, as it takes off, it accidentally flies into a group of teenage boys, who scream and run away in terror. As the pterosaur corrects it path and flies off, Roger orders his family to return to the car and follow the Tapejara.

Back at the A.R.C, Jess, who is about to head out for the night, intercepts a 999 call from Southern UK reporting a creature attack and informs Matt and Emily as they are about to head home for the night. After listening to the caller describe the creature as a large bat, Matt decides that they should investigate and Jess calls Abby, Connor, and Becker while Matt and Emily head to the armory to gear up. As Matt and Emily leave, Jess locates the car park to attack took place in and surprised that the car park has a CCTV system. Hacking into the CCTV, Jess reviews the footage and pauses the tape at the exact time of the attack. As Matt and Emily return with several EMDs and takes several black boxes, Jess shows them the still of CCTV feed. Matt quickly identifies the perpetrator as a Tapejara before telling Jess to play the footage, as they'll need an idea of which way the pterosaur had flown off in. As Jess plays the CCTV footage, the Lakes appear on the CCTV feed. Emily asks who they are, as it's obvious that the Lakes are chasing after the Tapejara. However, Jess is unable to identify them and promises to keep an eye on them, as well as figure out their identities before telling Matt and Emily to get going. Once Matt and Emily have left the main hub, Jess begins her investigation.

A few hours later, the Lakes have regained the Tapejara's trail and followed it to a forest outside of town. However, it had disappeared into the forest, prompting Roger to park the car. He orders Eve to stay in the car before he gets out, gathers his gear, and violently drags Darren out of the car before setting out to find the pterosaur. As the two disappear, Eve, feeling helpless about the situation, has a mental breakdown. A while later, Matt and Emily, who are now joined by Abby, Connor, and Becker, arrive on the scene, after following the Tapejara's general direction, and they quickly take notice of Eve and the car. Walking up to the car, Connor, Abby, and Becker take notice of Eve's striking resemblance of Helen's disguise back when she infiltrated the A.R.C years prior while Matt checks up on Eve and asks her about her connection with the Tapejara. This causes Eve to explain the entire situation to the team, prompting Becker to ask Jess to run a background check on Roger.

Back at the A.R.C, Jess does a background check on Roger and is shocked to find him in the criminal database. Pulling up his files, she is horrified to learn that he has been imprisoned for multiple counts of assault, domestic abuse, drug distribution, animal cruelty, and violations of his lifetime ban of keeping animals on several occasions. She quickly informs the team about her finds, and Matt tells her to call the police before he and the rest of the ARC team sets out to find Roger and Darren, taking Eve with them as they do not have anyone else to look after her.

It isn't long before they locate Roger and Darren, and Matt ask the former about his connection to the Tapejara. Roger, tells him that it came out of a "glowing thing" back in 2011 and he captured it and kept it in his collection of birds ever since. He also mentions how he sometimes needs to keep it in its place, sadistically chuckling at his own comment before Abby expresses her disgust with him and his love for abusing animals. Connor, however, calms her down before Matt informs Roger that the police are on their way, and once they arrest him, he'll be spending a long time in prison for not only abusing his family and the birds in his possession, but for stealing government property as well. This enrages Roger, who tells the team that they don't own his "one-of-a-kind crested bird" and that he'll do everything in his power to keep it out of their hands. As he begins to drag Darren away, the Tapejara suddenly appears and attacks Roger before fleeing. Roger quickly lets go of Darren and chases after the Tapejara, allowing the ARC team to rush over and check on Darren. After making sure that he's alright, Matt assigns Connor to watch over the Lakes while he and the rest of the team go after after Roger and the Tapejara. As the others disappear into the darkness, Darren begs Connor to let him help, given his bond with the Tapejara. This leaves Connor conflicted, and he tries to weigh his options.

Meanwhile, near the Beachy Head cliffside, Roger had managed to corner the Tapejara and prepares to strike it with his tire iron. However, he is interrupted by the arrival of the ARC team arrives and Abby orders him to stop. However, Roger gives her a taunting smirk before striking the Tapejara, prompting Becker to fire his EMD. The EMD charge hits Roger and knocks him out, but to everyone's horror, he falls over the cliffside and disappears from view. The team rushes over to the cliffside, where they see Roger's unconscious form at the bottom of the small drop. They decide to deal with him later and they turn their attention to the Tapejara, who is recovering from its strike. Emily is about to incapacitate the Tapejara when it lets out a shrill and flies away, prompting the team to chase it.

Meanwhile, Darren successfully convinces Connor to let him help and they and Eve try to catch up with the others. Connor takes the give Darren and Eve a quick rundown of what he and the ARC team do before the Tapejara flies over them. They chase after it, but it makes a turn and flies over the cliff and disappears from view. With the part of the cliff that they're standing on being too high to safely drop down from, the trio must take the long way down to the beach to follow the Tapejara, and they head off to the nearby trail. Meanwhile, Roger wakes up and pushes himself up before catching his breath. Once he had regained his strength, he grabs his iron bar and tries to find the A.R.C team.

Nearby, the A.R.C team is scanning the area for any sign of the Tapejara, but to no avail. The team regroups and decides to split up, with Abby and Matt searching the current area and Emily and Becker searching the base of the cliffs. As Emily and Becker head toward the other side of the cliff, Abby and Matt scan the area for the Tapejara. Suddenly, Roger runs up to Matt and knocks him out, prompting Abby to aim her EMDs and him. However, Roger takes Matt's EMD, sets it to the highest setting, and points it at him before ordering Abby to drop her EMD. She begrudgingly complies with Roger's demands and he proceeds to ask for her cooperation in finding the Tapejara or risk getting Matt killed.

Meanwhile, Emily and Becker, who had heard Abby's cries, watch the confrontation from a bush and they debate whether or not they should help out. Suddenly, the Tapejara flies past them, with Eve, Darren, and Connor chasing it (but they don't notice them), causing them to duck as it flies past them. As the Tapejara flies overhead, Roger gets distracted, allowing Abby to attack him. She grabs Roger's iron bar and Matt's EMD, but Roger quickly takes the weapons back. He is about to strike Abby when the Tapejara pecks him, striking him in the arm. Roger cries in pain as he drops everything and stumbles away from Abby. Abby tries to grab Roger before he can fall over the edge. However, she misses him by a centimetre and can only watch in horror as Roger plummets to his death. Becker and Emily quickly race over to help, as well as Connor, Eve, and Darren, and while Emily checks on Matt, Becker fires his EMD at the Tapejara as it comes in for another attack, knocking it out. As he puts the Tapejara into the cage, Connor joins Abby's side and comforts her, all the while looking over the cliff and looking at Roger dead body. Matt wakes up and as Emily helps him onto his feet, he takes notice of Eve and Darren looking over the edge of the cliff. Walking over to them, he asks them if they're alright, to which Eve assures him that they're fine, and that she's relieved that they're finally free from Roger.

Later, at around sunrise, the local police take Roger's body away while the ARC team tries to make a cover story. Matt checks up on Eve, who asks him what will happen now, to which Matt tells her that all of Roger's birds and the Tapejara will be taken to the proper facilities to be treatment before informing her that she and Darren are going to have to be taken back to the ARC for questioning and debriefing.

As Eve and Darren follows Matt and the others back to their cars, Abby asks Eve if she knew a woman by the name of Helen Cutter, to which Eve says yes before asking why. Connor tells her that Helen used her face for a disguise a few years ago when she infiltrated their workplace. Eve apologizes, telling them that she told Helen not to use her for a disguise when she visited her all those years ago, but Helen convinced her otherwise after telling her that a group of people were trying to destroy the human race and that she was going to stop them. However, Connor informs her that it was Helen who was trying to do that, much to Eve's shock. Eve apologizes for any hardships her involvement with Helen had on him and Abby, to which they accept, telling her that she didn't know. Matt then tells Eve that when they get to the ARC, she and Darren will be escorted to an interrogation room where they will be questioned further.

Later, at the A.R.C, Abby and Connor bring the Tapejara to the Menagerie, where Connor suggests putting it with Rex, Sid, and Nancy. However, Abby reminds him that Tapejara is thought to have eaten reptiles, on top of eating fish and fruits, and puts it in an empty enclosure. They then leave the Tapejara to adjust to its new home before heading back to the Menagerie viewing room, where they watch Rex, Sid, and Nancy play with each other.

Meanwhile, in Matt's office, Emily asks if Eve and Darren are the ones the second Matt was talking about, but before Matt can answer her, the second Matt appears and tells her that "[t]hose two are not the ones I was talking about. It's someone else." Emily is surprised by the second Matt's sudden appearance, but before she can ask him anything, he leaves Matt's office.

Cancelled story idea[]

It was planned for this story to feature several Pliocene animals, but the story was changed when Tim Haines felt that this did not influence the story arc in any way and told Helen Raynor to write a story with an escaped creature and introduce new characters to the story.

Trivia[]

  • The colouration of the Tapejara is similar to the Tapejara seen in Walking with Dinosaurs
  • The Tapejara in this episode is actually based on a related pterosaur called Tupandactylus, specifically Tupandactylus navigans, which also appeared in Walking with Dinosaurs and was referred to as Tapejara

Errors[]

  • The cage that the Tapejara was contained in would not have been large enough to keep the creature inside. (Suggesting it is a prop)
