Synopsis[]

The team responds to a creature incursion at a park, where they encounter someone who they believed was long dead.

Plot[]

In a park, a group of boys is playing football when one of the boys kicks the ball into a thicket. One of the boys offers to retrieve it and follows it into the thicket, where he stumbles upon the anomaly. As he stares at it in awe, a Haast's Eagle comes through the anomaly, scaring him and causing him to flee to his friends. The eagle chases after the boy, who had returned to his friends, and attacks them, causing them to run away in fear.

Meanwhile, at the A.R.C, Matt goes to Lester's office to tell him about what the second Matt had told him the previous day, but before he can tell him the details, the detector goes off. Jess locates the anomaly to the park while the team gears up before they head down to the car park, where they meet up with a tardy Eve. Eve tells Matt that Darren is ill, thus he couldn't come into work today, before asking about the situation. Matt tells her that he'll brief her on the way and the field team drives off to the park.

When there arrive at the park, they encounter the boys from the beginning of the episode and ask them if they've seen anything strange. The boys direct them to where the anomaly was before Jenny and a medic leads them away. In the meantime, the others head over to the anomaly site and secure it, but before Connor can lock the anomaly, a woman comes through. Thinking it's a creature, Michael fires his EMD at the woman, knocking her out. Connor locks the anomaly while everyone rushes over to check on the woman, but as they flip her onto her back, they are shocked to find that the woman is none other than Sarah Page.

Everyone is shocked seeing her alive, and once Sarah wakes up, everyone who knew her happily greets and hugs her while Becker asks her how she is still alive, as he saw the car she was hiding in getting attacked by Future Predators during the final rescue mission. Sarah tells him that several Megopterans attacked the Predators before they could kill her, allowing her to slip away, but when she got to the anomaly site, it had already close. She then recounts how she survived on her own for the next few years before stumbling across the park anomaly. Everyone welcomes her back and introduces her to Matt, Emily, Anna, Ryan, Kieran, Eve, and Michael, who they mention is Jenny's husband and the person who shot her, when they hear the squawks of a large bird. They follow the sound to a nearby field and find a pair of Giant Moas being attacked by the Haast's Eagle. One of the Moas trip and as the eagle is about to pin it down, Sarah asks to borrow Becker's EMD before shooting it at the Haast's Eagle. She misses, but the shot was enough to scare the eagle away and allow the Moa to escape into the thicket its mate had run into.

Back at the A.R.C, Elizabeth stops by Lester's office to update her on her research when Jess stops by and informs them about Sarah's return. As she leaves, Lester is completely speechless while Elizabeth wears a concerned look on her face. However, she quickly snaps out of her daze and excuses herself back to her office.

Back at the park, the Haast's Eagle attacks a young mother and her toddler, grievously injuring the mother and killing the toddler. Meanwhile, the team, which has regrouped, is discussing their plan when they hear the young mother's screams. They find the injured mother and informs Jess of the situation before taking the young mother away on a stretcher. While some Special Forces medics deal with the dead toddler's body, Matt splits the team up, with him, Emily, Abby, Connor, and Ryan going after the eagle and the Moas, and Jenny, Michael, Eve, Becker, and Anna evacuating every civilian still in the park. Meanwhile, Sarah, Danny, and Kieran are assigned with guarding the anomaly site. Once Matt finishes assigning everyone into teams, they split up. Sarah follows Danny and Kieran to the anomaly site, where she says how much has changed before mentioning how much Eve reminds her of Helen's disguise. Danny explains everything before Kieran gets a call from Becker, requesting some help, and runs off to help him, leaving Danny and Sarah alone to do some catching up.

Back at the A.R.C, Elizabeth enters her office and is just about to inform her secret boss about Sarah's return when Lester walks in, telling her that he needs to speak to her about something. They sit down and Lester tells her that he thinks that Sarah's return could be the second Matt's doing, but Elizabeth dismisses it, telling him it might be just a coincidence. Lester sarcastically says that he's reassured before taking his leave. Once he is gone, Elizabeth speed-dials her secret boss and fills him in on the situation.

Back at the park, Matt and his team follow the Haast's eagle to the park's skateboarding rink, where they lose it before arrival and find several boys still at the rink. They call out to them, but as they turn around, the Haast's eagle attacks them and grievously mauls one of the boys. The team fire their EMDs at it, but the eagle takes off, having spotted the two moas from before. As the team chases after the Eagle, Matt spots the second Matt and approaches him, asking him what he wants. The second Matt taunts him about the boy's death, telling him that he could've done something to save him. As Matt tries to argue back, Emily runs over to him, asking if he's okay. Matt turns back to where the second Matt had been standing at, only to see that he had slipped away, before reassuring Emily that he's okay before they catch up with the others.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the park, Becker and Anna, who had split off from Jenny, Michael, and Eve, while they guide civilians to the nearest exit, are searching for any stragglers when Kieran arrives. They then hear the cries of a frightened young girl and find her hiding in some bushes. After some convincing, they get the girl to come out of the bush and comfort her before taking her to safety.

Later, Danny and Sarah regroup with the team and discuss their next course of action when they hear a Moa shrill. They follow the noise and find the Haast's Eagle attacking one of the Moas. Abby shoots an EMD bolt at the eagle, but it misses and the eagle kills the Moa while the other Moa grieves from the trees. Connor and Becker fire their EMDs at the eagle, which tries to escape. However, Becker shoots the eagle in mid-air, causing it to plummet to its death. Later, after the surviving Moa had been captured, it and the corpses of the Haast's Eagle and its mate are sent back through the anomaly and the team returns to the A.R.C.

At the A.R.C, Sarah comments on the changes made to the A.R.C, to which Lester explains what had happened after the final search and rescue mission. Sarah gives Lester a hug, which he reluctantly returns before she is introduced to Jess and Elizabeth. After introducing themselves to each other, Lester tells Sarah that she can have her old job back before heading back to his office. However, he quickly stops and tells her about the second Matt situation before returning to his office. Sarah asks the team about the second Matt to which Matt tells her that he'll fill her in on a later date. Jess then asks where she is going to live, to which she says she'll try to reconnect and make peace with her sister and see if she can move in with her. While Jess offers to let Sarah stay at her place as she gets things sortet, Elizabeth takes her leave and goes to her office, where she calls her secret boss and tells them about Sarah's return and if it will impact the plan in any way. Her boss reassures her that Sarah's return hasn't changed any of their plans and that she should focus on killing Jack before hanging up. Elizabeth is left to her own thoughts before she sits down at her desk and continues with her work.

Cancelled story idea[]

Originally, the episode was planned to have a pack of Future Predators invade a sports centre. However, the story was changed when Tim Haines stated that he didn't want any Future Predators in Season 7, so the episode was reworked to focus on the Haast's Eagle and the Gian Moa instead. The script for the episode was halfway finished when Laila Rouass, the actress of Sarah Page, expressed interest of reprising her role, so the script was edited to include Sarah's return.

Controversy[]

When it aired, the episode drew immediate controversy due to its graphic content, with particular focus on the Haast's Eagle's graphic killing the toddler in the episode. A mere days after it was broadcasted, more than 50,000 complaints had been sent to Ofcom. Writer Robert Shearman stated he wanted to show "the ultimate worst-case scenario for the ARC; a tangible reminder that innocent bystanders can and do get hurt in what the ARC does." Executive producer Tim Haines stated he "understood why people were shocked" and commented on the complaints as being indicative of the demographics of the audience:

"The whole response, to me, is a very interesting commentary on demographics, with our (probably) very die-hard core fan community very clearly demanding a darker tone, while our broader viewership was shocked by the dark content. It's interesting as to how you balance it."
