Episode 8.6 is the sixth episode of the eighth and final series of Primeval.

Synopsis[]

The team finds themselves teaming up with Evan and Dylan again after a Quetzalcoatlus appears and begins to terrorize the London City Airport. Meanwhile, Eve goes undercover to spy on Elizabeth and find out where her true loyalties lie.

Plot[]

The episode opens with Evan and Dylan exiting from their flight's gate at the London City Airport. Dylan asks Evan why they had to spend more money to take another flight back when they could have stayed in London the last time they were here. Evan gives her a lame excuse about needing to work on another gadget, which she points out that all he did once they got back to Vancouver was go anomaly hunting without back-up. Evan tries to justify that it was for the sake of testing the prototype, but Dylan teasingly calls him out on it before asking what they should do. However, before Evan can tell her his answer, the sudden screams of terrified people catch their attention. Deciding to investigate the situation, Evan and Dylan head in the direction of the screams. Meanwhile, outside, an airport worker screams in terror as a Quetzalcoatlus attack and kills him.

Meanwhile, at the A.R.C, a fully recovered Eve is standing in Lester office as he brings her up to speed on current events before briefing her on her special assignment. He informs her that with the Minister's continual denial of his involvement with the Firm (which happened after the end of Episode 8.5), he wants her (Eve) to go undercover and gather evidence on their treachery via Elizabeth, who is going to be attending a conference at the University of London, along with finding out what the Firm's plan is. However, she will have to rely on her wits because the mission isn't officially sanctioned, thus Jess won't be able to help her. Eve asks Lester if he's sure if she's qualified for the mission, to which Lester rhetorically asks her what does she think. However, before she can reply, the anomaly detector alarm goes off, and while the field team gears up for their mission, Lester gives Eve her undercover name, Rebecca Hastings, and tells her to go to Sarah's office to get ready before dismissing her. Eve leaves and heads down to Sarah's office, where she and Danny help her get ready for her mission.

Meanwhile, at the London City Airport, the A.R.C team arrives and quickly make their way to the anomaly site. However, as they enter the airport to get to the anomaly site, the A.R.C team are surprised to find Evan and Dylan helping some airport staff herd civilians toward shops and bathrooms before asking them about the situation. Evan and Dylan explain to them that there is a Quetzalcoatlus outside and that the anomaly site is near the runway. Matt sends Becker and a team of A.R.C soldiers (which also includes Kieran and Ryan) out to lock the anomaly while Emily, Abby, and Jack are sent to evacuate any airport staff working outside. Meanwhile, Jenny is tasked with dealing with the PR mess (with Michael helping her) while him, Connor, Evan, and Dylan figure out how to capture the Quetzalcoatlus.

Meanwhile, Sarah and Danny finish the final touches on Eve's disguise and helps her get into character before dropping her off half a kilometre away from the A.R.C, there Eve calls for a cab and heads to the University of London. Once she arrives, Eve pays the taxi driver, gets out of the cab and enters the campus. There, she locates the site of the conference before slipping through security.

Back at the A.R.C, a soldier is doing his routine patrol around the A.R.C when he hears a noise. Curious, he goes to investigate but is swiftly knocked out by Ethan. Taking the guard's EMD, Ethan continues down the hall, but to his luck, Jess spots him on the CCTV feed during her quick routine check and she immediately sounds the alarm. Knowing he has no time to waste, Ethan quickly heads towards his destination.

Back at the airport, Becker and Emily's team have finished their tasks and are helping Matt's team lure the Quetzalcoatlus out. However, the azhdarchid remains defiant and continues to roost on top of the airport building's roof. Evan and Dylan volunteer to head up to the roof and get the Quetzalcoatlus to move, but before Matt can give them the go-ahead, a plane comes in for a landing. This causes the Quetzalcoatlus to attack the incoming plane and cause it to crash. As it tries to peck its way through the plane, the A.R.C team and airport security arrive to thwart the pterosaur away before helping the survivors.

Meanwhile, at the University of London, Eve blends in within the crowd and scans the conference meeting area for any sign of Elizabeth before locating her mingling with the conference's organizers. Once Elizabeth excuses herself and walks away, Eve inconspicuously tails her before locating the office room Elizabeth is keeping her bags in. Once Elizabeth leaves the office to use the restroom, Eve enters the office and to her convenience, she finds Elizabeth's laptop sitting on the desk, lid wide open. She quickly enters Elizabeth's laptop password (courtesy of Jess) and pulls out the external hard drive that was given to her. However, before she can plug the hard drive in, she hears Elizabeth walking back to the office and puts the laptop to sleep before hiding beside a shelf. As Eve holds her breath, trying to not be seen, Elizabeth pulls a document out from a folder in her bag and sets it onto her desk before logging into her laptop opening a word document. Elizabeth edits a few paragraphs in her document before her phone's alarm goes off. Elizabeth quickly leaves, remembering that the conference is about to begin, allowing Eve to catch her breath. After catching her breath, Eve reads the document on Elizabeth's desk, only to find it irrelevant, before downloading everything on Elizabeth's laptop onto the external hard drive, finding tons of incriminating emails and documents along the way.

Meanwhile, at the A.R.C, Ethan had somehow managed to get himself on the second level of the A.R.C without getting caught and enters Connor's lab. After locating pieces of the New Dawn Prototype, Ethan steals several components of the Prototype before leaving the lab. He then makes his way into the Menagerie, just as several Special Forces soldiers and Lester round the corner. They enter Connor's lab, only to find it empty, much to Lester's frustration. Jess then informs Lester that Ethan is in the Menagerie, but she can't tell what he's doing. Meanwhile, in the Menagerie, Ethan is soldering the New Dawn Prototype component to the bomb he had planted beside the Columbian Mammoth enclosure.

Back at the London City Airport, the team is helping airport paramedics and security forces with saving the crash survivors. As they pull survivors out from the crash, Abby finds a young girl trapped beneath some fallen luggage. With the orientation of how the suitcase had fallen preventing Abby from freeing her, Abby calls for help. As Evan and Jack arrive to help, Abby tries to keep the girl calm by talking to her. Through this, she finds out that the girl's name is Ellie Pitts, and that she was coming back home with her mother, who was injured in the crash, from a trip to Washington, D.C. As Abby and Ellie continue to talk, Jack and Evan manage to unlodge the suitcase that was trapping Ellie and the young girl is brought outside, where she is given to the paramedics tending to her mother. With all of the surviving passengers and crew safely extracted, the A.R.C team turn their attention back to the troublesome Quetzalcoatlus, which had returned to its roost.

Back at the University of London, Eve exits Elizabeth's temporary office and heads to the CCTV room to erase any evidence of her activities. Once she arrives at the CCTV room, she knocks out the guard watching the security cameras with a chloroform-stained rag and proceeds to delete every security feed that shows her acting suspicious. Once she finishes erasing her incriminating activities, she flees the CCTV room, but as she walks away, a security guard stops her, telling her that the area is a restricted area. Eve, pretending to be a timid and embarrassed conference attendee, quickly uses the "got lost finding the bathroom" excuse, which surprisingly works before leaving. She then makes her way outside, where she calls a taxi and heads back to the A.R.C.

Back at the London City Airport, the team regroups and tries to figure out how to get the Quetzalcoatlus down from the roof. They decide to send a few people up onto the roof to force the pterosaur down to the ground, where the rest of the team will knock it out with the EMDs. Evan and Dylan offer to head up to the roof, which Matt reluctantly agrees, but he also has Abby and Michael go with them as backup. The four head up onto the roof, where they try to sneak up on the Quetzalcoatlus. However, the Quetzalcoatlus spots them and attacks, causing everyone to scatter. After several intense minutes of dodging the Quetzalcoatlus, Abby and Dylan are able to get a clear shot on the Quetzalcoatlus and fire their EMDs. The Quetzalcoatlus stumbles off the roof and plummets to the ground, where the rest of the team neutralizes it. With the Quetzalcoatlus now unconscious, the team sends the pterosaur back through the anomaly.

Back at the A.R.C, Eve enters the main hub and asks Jess where Lester is. Jess tells her that Ethan had broken into the A.R.C and had placed something in the Menagerie before telling Lester that Ethan had used the Menagerie's lower level doors to escape. Lester sends a four-man squad to chase after Ethan while him and two Special Forces soldiers investigate the object Ethan had placed. To his horror, the object is a bomb and as he informs Jess about the bomb, the countdown time is activated. Lester tells Jess to evacuate the A.R.C, to which she asks about Ethan. Lester tells her to forget about Ethan and get everyone out. Jess reluctantly complies and while she, Eve, and the rest of the A.R.C staff evacuate the building, Lester and the soldiers try to defuse the bomb.

Meanwhile, on the freeway, the field team gets word from Jess that there is a bomb in the A.R.C. Matt informs her that they'll be arriving in a few minutes. Upon arriving at the A.R.C, everybody, except for Jess, the Millers, Danny, and Sarah, head towards the Menagerie, running past Lester and the two Special Forces soldiers along the way. Upon arriving at the Menagerie, the team tries to defuse the bomb, but just like in Episode 4.6, all of the bomb's wires are red, making it impossible for the team to determine which wire to cut.

Evan, meanwhile, disconnects the bomb's battery, which does nothing to stop the countdown timer before suggesting that they try to locate the detonator. Matt agrees with his idea and while Connor and Emily are tasked with keeping an eye on the timer (much to the former's annoyance), everyone else carefully looks for the detonator. Becker eventually finds the detonator, and after removing it from the rest of the bomb, Evan uses a wire from his hand-held anomaly detector to shunt the wires attached to the detonator. Dylan then cuts the wires from the bomb, deactivating the bomb. After catching their breathes, the team heads back to the main hub, where they are debriefed.

After debriefing the team, Lester thanks Evan and Dylan for their help before asking why they've returned. After beating around the bush, Evan and Dylan reluctantly reveal that Connor (from their perspective) had told them that they must help the A.R.C put an end to the Firm's plan. After dealing with potential scheduling conflicts (which there aren't any), Lester tells them that they can work with alongside the A.R.C team until the Firm had been dealt with. He then assigns Matt with bringing Evan and Dylan up to speed with the situation and asks Jess and Becker to increase security before shooing everyone out of his office. Everyone except Eve leaves and once the door closes, Eve hands Lester the hard drive containing everything on Elizabeth's laptop. Lester is pleased with the outcome and asks Eve if she still doubts that she's qualified. Eve laughs and says no before leaving his office. Once the door closes, Lester hides the hard drive in his briefcase and resumes his work.

Meanwhile, at the Firm's warehouse base, Elizabeth asks Ethan if he had planted the bomb in the A.R.C, which he answers yes. However, he suspects that they might have already disarmed the bomb, but Elizabeth tells him that it doesn't matter, and that all that matters is that they give the A.R.C team a strong message, telling them that their time is running short and it won't be long before the A.R.C finally falls.

Cancelled Story Idea[]

Originally, the episode was planned to entirely focus around Eve and her mission to gather evidence on the Minister and Elizabeth's betrayal. However, this was changed when producer Tim Haines expressed his belief that the episode would have been boring for audiences' taste and thus, the Quetzalcoatlus sub-plot was drafted for the episode as well.

Trivia[]

  • Darren does not appear in this episode, so it is presumed that he is still recovering from the injuries he received from Episode 8.3.
  • This is the first episode since Episode 8.1 not to feature the Second Matt Anderson.
