Episode 8.8 is the eighth episode of the eighth and final season of Primeval.

Synopsis[]

The team is faced with a dilemma when a herd of Iguanodon appears at Stonehenge, risking the exposure of the anomalies' existence to the public. However, as they try to contain the incursion without arousing the public's interest, the team's mission takes a surprising turn when a woman bearing a striking resemblance to Jenny appears.

Plot[]

The episode opens in the early hours of the morning at Stonehenge, with the wind howling quietly as an abnormal, near-invisible anomaly stands at the centre of Stonehenge, dimly illuminating the monument. Suddenly, a mysterious woman exits the strange anomaly and scans the landscape. However, as she is surveying the surrounding landscape, a normal anomaly opens, illuminating Stonehenge and blinding the woman. Once she recovers, the woman looks at the anomaly, just in time to see a herd of Iguanodon exit the anomaly. Not wanting to get trampled, the woman runs away to the east, but little does she know, a mysterious man had seen everything.

Meanwhile, at the A.R.C, the team is settling in for another day while Sarah is studying the Artifact, having finished cleaning it a few minutes earlier, with Matt observing from behind. Sarah comments how the Artifact in front of them is different from the Artifact she and Connor had studied back in Series 3, pointing out the strange connection port that was found connected at one end of the Artifact. As she shows Matt the shape of the connection port, Danny enters with some coffee and watches them ponder over the connection port. After noticing the shape of the connection port is the same dimensions as the anomaly opening device, he suggests that they try plugging the anomaly opening device that was found at the Greenhouse incursion (in Episode 6.8) into it and see what happens. Realizing that Danny is onto something, Matt heads to his office, where he had hidden the device for safe-keeping and gives the anomaly opening device to Sarah. Upon inserting the anomaly opening device into the Artifact connection port, the anomaly opening device comes to life and begins to download data from the Artifact. They celebrate and as Matt heads down to Lester's office to inform him of the news, the anomaly detector goes off. In the main hub, Lester and the Minister walk over to the ADD, where a confused Jess stares at the monitor. Jess tells them that the detected anomaly has been active for over an hour, even though the ADD had been online for over half an hour and counting. Matt, Danny, Sarah, and the rest of the team (minus Abby, Connor, Evan, and Dylan) join the trio by the detector, and after informing Lester about the Artifact, the team (and the Minister) decides to head down to Stonehenge to investigate the anomaly, hoping that anomaly being detected and the Artifact activating is purely just a coincidence.

Meanwhile, at an abandoned cottage located 1.2 km east of Stonehenge, the mysterious woman rests on the front steps of the abandoned cottage when the mysterious man appears. On guard, the woman asks who he is, but all he tells her is that the A.R.C team is coming soon and to wait inside the abandoned cottage. When asked why, the man simply dodges the question, telling her to do as he says. The woman reluctantly follows the man's directions and waits inside of the abandoned cottage.

Meanwhile, at Stonehenge, the team arrives to find the anomaly open and several Iguanodon wandering about. After locking the anomaly, Jack inspects the tracks leading from the anomaly and determines that the Iguanodons grazing near and around Stonehenge are only a few out at least 200 Iguanodons, which he guess may have scattered into smaller groups that are wandering around the countryside. Matt, quickly grasping the situation, splits the team between him and Becker, tasking Becker, Kieran, Ryan, Michael, Abby, and Danny to lead two squads of Special Forces soldiers to round up the Iguanodons while him, Emily, Jenny, the Minister, Jack, Caroline, Eve, and Darren search the surrounding for the rest of the Iguanodons. However, Jenny informs him that Abby had taken the morning off to deal with her and Connor's upcoming wedding ceremony. With the team short one active member, Eve offers to stay behind and help Becker's team before everybody splits up.

Meanwhile, in London, Abby and a wheelchair-bounded Connor meet up with a wedding planner from WeddingPlanner.co.uk. After exchanging formalities, they get down to business and Connor and Abby tell the wedding planner what kind of wedding they have in mind. They want small, but modest, wedding, with around 30 guests attending. The wedding planner gives them a rough estimate as to how much money they'll spend to make the wedding possible and after finding out that it's within their budget range, Abby and Connor begin to discuss possible venue locations with the wedding planner.

Meanwhile, at the A.R.C, Elizabeth checks the hallway for anyone passing by before retreating into her office and calling the second Matt. The second Matt asks her about her status, to which she tells him that so far, no one in the A.R.C has brought up her suspicious behaviour. Although displeased with this fact, the second Matt moves on and asks if the A.R.C knows about their involvement with the kidnappings, to which Elizabeth mentions that the mission report from the zoo incursion mentions Lucien's kidnapping but that subsequent investigations have turned up nothing. The second Matt is please with this news, despite this small hiccup, before informing Elizabeth that he already sent men out kidnap Ben Trent (From Episode 1.1) and Jake Green (from Episode 2.6), two kids that are connected to the A.R.C team, and that he is speeding up their plan since Evan and Dylan's arrival mean that their final member will be arriving sooner or later. Elizabeth agrees with the kidnapping plot and the change in plans, and after signing out, she returns to her work.

Back with the team, Jack determines that the main herd had split off into three groups, one heading east, one heading northwest, and a pair heading north towards Larkhill. Matt divides the team into three groups, assigning Jenny and the Minister with the eastern group, and Jack, Caroline, and Darren the northwestern group. This leaves him and Emily to deal with the lone pair in Larkhill. After agreeing with the plan (with some minor teasing/complaining from Jack and Darren), Matt's team splits up and head off to deal with their assigned task. Matt and Emily enter Larkhill, and while searching the town for the Iguanodon pair, Emily and Matt talk about the recent string of kidnappings and how much longer until Matt's plan will be ready. Suddenly, they hear a scream and head over to the town's combined post office and pet shop, where they witness a bull Iguanodon violently knock a female worker onto the ground. Thinking quickly, Matt tells Emily to cover him before rushing over to save the woman. As Emily fires her EMD at the bull Iguanodon, Matt drags the worker to safety before helping Emily take down the bull Iguanodon. Once the bull had been knocked out, Matt calls Jess, telling her to send a flatbed and a medical team to his position. the team arrive and Matt notices Connor and Abby ain't there and Jenny tells him they are planning their wedding as it is next week and then they hear concerns and then the weird man tells Jenny to go to the cottage and she breaks up from the team and the Minister follows her.

Meanwhile, with Jenny and the Minister, the former tries her best to act civil yet distant with the chatty Minister while they track their half of the Iguanodon herd toward Amesbury when they pass by the abandoned cottage. As they walk past the cottage, Jenny gets the feeling they are being watched and looks towards one of the windows, where she notices the mysterious woman staring through the window before disappearing into the dark. Curious, Jenny heads over to the cottage, much to the Minister's confusion, and upon reaching the cottage, Jenny tells the Minister to be quiet and to wait outside before entering the cottage. Upon entering the cottage, Jenny cautiously checks every room before running into the mysterious woman. To her bewilderment, the woman is none other than Claudia Brown, her previous incarnation, who is equally as bewildered as her. As the two look-alikes try to figure out what is going on, the Minister watches everything unfold through the window when he suddenly hears a distant honk. Looking out into the distance, the Minister spots several Iguanodon grazing on the edge of a nearby forest, across the A303 and quickly heads inside to inform Jenny, who had managed to calm a confused Claudia down.

Meanwhile, at the A.R.C, Sarah studies the Artifact and is stumped as she tries to figure out the number sequence on the Artifact means. After some digging on the Internet, she finds out that the number sequence pinpoints a location 20 miles northeast of London, in Loughton. However, this only confuses her until she realizes that the number sequence could be indicating where the Artifact stored in the future. However, this doesn't explain the two letters, CB, at the start of the number sequence. As she ponders, trying to figure out what the letters mean, the anomaly opening device suddenly beeps, surprising Sarah. Sarah can only watch in awe and confusion as the Artifact suddenly begins to light up before releasing a sonic wave, seemingly knocking the A.R.C's power out and knocking Sarah to the wall, knocking her out.

Meanwhile, at Stonehenge, Becker's team send the last of their Iguanodons back through the anomaly before Kieran calls Becker over to where he's standing as he monitors the anomaly. Becker joins his side, where he is surprised that the handheld anomaly detector is picking up two anomalies. However, looking at the anomaly site, they can only see one. Thinking that it might be just like the prison anomalies (from Episode 4.7), Becker orders a soldier to bring out the second anomaly locking device. However, when they activate both anomaly locking devices, the anomaly locks up as a normal anomaly should instead of splitting into two, making everyone even more confused. Knowing something strange is going on, Becker tries to call Matt on the comms, only to get no response. Confused and fearing that something is wrong back at the A.R.C, Becker sends Ryan and a four-man squad back to the A.R.C to see what is going on. As Ryan heads out, Becker calls Matt on his cellphone and informs him of Kieran's discovery.

Meanwhile, at the abandoned cottage, Claudia explains everything that had happened after the second Forest of Dean incursion and up to this point, from how the A.R.C was formed and how the Cutters and Captain Ryan's team were presumed dead. Jenny informs Claudia that Captain Ryan and his team were all killed and only the Cutters came back. Hearing this, Claudia asks her about Nick's whereabouts, only for Jenny to regrettably tell her that Helen had murdered him three years ago, but quickly added that Helen is no more. Claudia, although saddened by the news of her love interest's death, is glad to know of Helen's fate. After comforting each other, the Minister reminds Jenny about the Iguanodon herd and they make a plan to herd them back toward Stonehenge. Claudia asks if she can help, which Jenny obliges and the three set out to herd their Iguanodons back to the anomaly.

Upon reaching the spot where the Minister spotted the Iguanodons, they suddenly hear a scream and rush over to the nearby row of houses south of the forest, where they see the Iguanodon herd grazing and wandering around. In the middle of the herd, a frightened young girl is trying to scoot away from an Iguanodon cow while her mother lays bloodied and motionless on the ground. Jenny tells the Minister to cover her in case anything happens before handing Claudia her EMD and slowly approaching the Iguanodon cow. After luring the cow away, she motions Claudia and the Minister to get the woman and girl to safety before luring the cow back to the rest of the herd. After that is done, she rejoins them and calms the young girl down. After calming her down, they find out that the girl's name is Tiffany Pierce and call Jess for medical back-up. However, all they get is static and they instead call Becker, who gets the Special Forces Ambulance down to their location. Later, the ambulance, along with a team of Special Forces soldiers and a trailer truck, arrive from Larkhill and loads Mrs Pierce into the back while Jenny explains the situation to a confused and worried Mr Pierce. After understanding what is going on, Mr Pierce reluctantly agrees to not go public about the Iguanodons before he notices a suspicious Special Forces soldier glancing around before approaching Tiffany, who is feeding one of the Iguanodons with Claudia. He points him out the Jenny and the Minister and before anyone can do anything, the soldier grabs Tiffany and holds her at knifepoint. He then forces the A.R.C team to let him go and hijacks one of the cars before driving away. As the imposter drives off with Tiffany, Jenny orders the other soldiers to go after him before attempting to report the kidnapping, but to no avail.

Back in London, Abby and Connor wrap up their wedding planning session and head to the A.R.C, only to find it in the middle of an outage. They arrive at the main hub, just in time to see Jess boot up the back-up generators. Abby asks them about the power outage, to which Lester brings her and Connor up to speed on the current situation before Jess determines that the source of the problem is in the power room. Abby and Connor volunteer to head down to the A.R.C's power room to restore power before heading down there. Upon arriving at the A.R.C's power room, Abby and Connor are horrified to discover that someone had cut several important wires in the power room, causing the outage in the A.R.C, and quickly report their findings to Lester. Lester tells them to fix the problem, and after finding some spare wires lying around, Connor begins to repair the sabotaged wires.

Meanwhile, with Jack, Darren, and Caroline, the trio have tracked their portion of the Iguanodon herd to the outskirts of Shrewton, where they find the Iguanodons grazing in/destroying a field of wheat. Unsure as to how to proceed, the trio brainstorm on a possible plan before Jack determines that their best course of action is to use the herd leader to lead the rest of the Iguanodons back to the anomaly site. After gathering some wheat, they locate the herd leader, a large, scarred-up bull, and cautiously lure him back toward Stonehenge. The bull is initially suspicious of the trio, but upon being offered some wheat, the bull follows the trio back toward Stonehenge, causing the rest of the herd to follow. As they lure the herd back to Stonehenge, Darren tries to call Becker's team to give them a heads up, only to get an earful of static.

Back at the A.R.C, Connor finishes his repairs on the sabotaged wires and tells Jess to turn off the generator. Jess follows Connor's order and once the generator is turned off, Connor flips the breaker switch on and successfully restores power to the A.R.C. As they celebrate, Jess is quickly forced to return to work, dealing with incoming calls from Jenny, Becker, and Darren and while she deals with that, Ryan and his squad returns and Lester orders them and security to do a sweep of the building for any intruders. Little do they know, however, someone was in the A.R.C, in Sarah's Lab. As Sarah wakes up, she sees Ethan/Patrick stowing the Artifact and anomaly opening device into a duffle bag, but stays still to avoid grabbing his attention. However, as he leaves, the lights come back on, and without a second thought, Sarah sounds the alarm. Ethan, realizing that he doesn't have time to stall, quickly makes his escape, narrowly avoiding getting captured by Ryan and his squad by hiding in Evan and Dylan's shared room at the A.R.C. After snooping through Evan and Dylan's belongings and finding nothing of interest, Ethan checks the halls for incoming people before making his escape.

Back at Stonehenge, everyone, except Jenny and the Minister, listen to Becker explain the situation with the strange anomaly readings while all of the Iguanodons are being sent back through the anomaly. As they try to come up with possible explanations, Jenny and the Minister return with the Special Forces soldiers sent to their position and Claudia, to everyone's confusion. After explaining the situation pertaining to Claudia, the rest of the team brings the three up to speed on the situation (all the while the last of the Iguanodons are sent back through the anomaly) before Claudia explains why the handheld detector is detecting two anomalies; because there is a nearly-invisible anomaly standing right beside the normal anomaly. Matt asks Claudia to explain, to which she reveals how she ended up in this timeline; her A.R.C had picked up a strange anomaly reading while dealing with an incursion, and after finding it, Claudia volunteered to go through it and see the other side. She admits that it was against protocol ever since the Cutters and Captain Ryan's team disappeared, but her desire to see Cutter again caused a lapse of judgement.

Knowing that she needs to return to her timeline, Matt tells Claudia that she has to go back, which she reluctantly agrees. However, before she can return to her timeline, both anomalies begin to collapse, prompting Claudia to run toward the invisible anomaly, but to her horror, the transparent anomaly, followed by the normal anomaly, closes before she can reach it. Now stuck in the current timeline, Claudia slowly accepts the fact that she'll never see her A.R.C team again and the team heads back to the A.R.C, informing Jess and Lester about Claudia.

Later, at the A.R.C, everyone attends debriefing in Lester's office, where they help Claudia settle in and catch her up on recent events, while Sarah informs the team about the theft of the Atrifact and the anomaly opening device. Knowing that the Firm is more dangerous, now that they are in possession of the Artifact, everyone turns to Matt, asking him about his plan, but to everyone's dismay, he still has a few more things to deal with before he can unveil it to them.

Sometime later, after Lester had dismissed everyone, the Minister enters Elizabeth's office and informs her of Claudia's arrival. Knowing that it won't be long before their final member joins them, they call the second Matt and informs him of them of Claudia's arrival. Happy to hear the news, the second Matt proclaims that everything has fallen perfectly into place and it won't be long until they enact their revenge on the A.R.C, but little do they know, Jess had witnessed everything.
